Eugene Knee Osteoarthritis and Quality of Life with a Mediterranean Diet

What do stiff, noisy, cracking knees and olive oil, fruits, veggies and red wine have in common? Knee osteoarthritis! Eugene knee pain sufferers undergo the morning routine with “bad” knees, the stiffness and pain that comes with waking up and moving. Rethwill Chiropractic Clinic hears our Eugene chiropractic patients describe this all the time. Those Eugene knee pain sufferers would appreciate getting some relief. What’s one way to get some relief? The Mediterranean diet that involves, of all things, eating. Rethwill Chiropractic Clinic asks “How bad can eating be for Eugene knee pain relief?”

Eugene OSTEOARTHRITIS SUFFERERS AND THEIR PAIN

Eugene knee osteoarthritis is ordinary. There are numerous Eugene knee pain sufferers. They are not alone! 240 million people around the world suffer with osteoarthritis. That affects about 10% of men and 18% of women. (1) Any Eugene knee osteoarthritis sufferer knows about the knee pain, the morning stiffness, and the creaky joint motion that reduces the quality of daily life. (1) It is just not very fun. Now a Mediterranean diet has potential to be fun though!

WHAT TO EAT ON A MEDITERRANEAN DIET

The Mediterranean diet includes eating plenty of fruits and vegetable, legumes and nuts, cereals and seeds, seafood and fish. The Mediterranean diet permits moderate intake of dairy, poultry and eggs along with red wine and olive oil as the main source of dietary lipids. (1) Yum! Consuming a Mediterranean diet can be quite delicious and exciting for a new Mediterranean diet adherent.

BENEFITS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET

Knee osteoarthritis entails inflammation in addition to pain. An analysis of three research reports highlights that biomarkers of inflammation and cartilage degradation because of osteoarthritis fell in the Mediterranean diet group. (1) Specifically, the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1α decreased in the Mediterranean diet group. (2) Knee osteoarthritis patients who stuck to a Mediterranean diet show a reduced risk of deteriorating knee pain at four years follow up. For those who did not experience knee osteoarthritis at the beginning of the 4 years study and followed a Mediterranean diet, a 9% lowered risk of getting knee osteoarthritis was reported. (3) Overall, a higher adherence to a Mediterranean diet is affiliated with better quality of life and decreased pain, disability and depressive symptoms. (4)
